THE FIRST ANNUAL CONFERENCE FEATURED

Dreamwork: Understanding the Language of the Night

Judy Sutherland, PhD, ATR-BC, LCPC
Renee Dobkin Dushman, MA, AMFT, LCPC

Dreams supplied by the workshop participants will be combined with psychodrama and art making to explore the meaning of the dream. Psychodrama and art making can enhance the group dreamwork. Both allow the metaphoric dream symbols to become concretized in the present moment stimulating new perceptions, which may provide a catalyst for insight and change. This is an experiential workshop.
1. Participants will learn the value of using creative arts therapies when working with dreams.
2. Participants will find that dreams are consistent with the dreamer's life style.

Debunking the Medical Model and "Evidence Based Practice" in Psychotherapy
John Petersen, Psy.D.

This presentation introduces participants to the "big picture" of what works in psychotherapy. Research convergence is clear and consistent, but points away from the professional lore of "Evidence Based Practice." Dr. Petersen also will give some direction for putting the big picture findings into practice with each unique client that you serve.
Goals:
1. Participants will understand the relative contribution of technique and theoretical model to the variance in treatment outcome.
2. Participants will be able to express in statistical terms the unimportance of diagnosis in treatment and technique selection.
3. Participants will become familiar with two simple and short scales that measure factors that best predict treatment success.
4. Participants will be able to articulate and empirically defend why Adlerian theory and technique are effective in your practice.
5. Participants will be able to identify situations in therapy practice when it is important to NOT behave like an Adlerian.

THIRD PRESENTATION - 1:30PM TO 3:00PM

Socratic Questions: The Lost Art in Counseling
Al Milliren, EdD, NCC
Diplomate of the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology

The use of Socratic questions in counseling has almost become a lost art. Those who studied with Dr. Alfred Adler learned his treatment style only through direct observation. Rarely, if ever, did Adler write about this process. Those who worked with Adler, however, have likened his method to the process of Socratic questioning. Through discussion, demonstration, and practice experiences, participants will have an opportunity to learn to use Socratic questions as a counseling technique. The use of Socratic questions not only enhances counseling effectiveness, it also fits well into a solution-focused, grief counseling model.
Goals:
1. Participants will learn to identify and develop various types of Socratic questions.
2. Participants will learn to apply Socratic questioning in a "single-step" response to client information.

FOURTH PRESENTATION - 3:00PM TO 4:00PM

"Shared Inquiry: A Gathering of Adlers"
Les White, Psy.D.
Donald Whitfield, Great Books Foundation

American educator Mortimer Adler (1902); founder, Great Books Foundation; no relation to (Alfred Adler) developed an approach to interpretive group discussions of literature called "shared inquiry." Adapting the Socratic questioning methods of shared inquiry to Adlerian Life Style analysis "opens up" interpretive possibilities, allowing clinicians and clients greater insight into their Life Style goals and themes.
Goals:
1. Participants will learn about a technique to assist them in analyzing clients' Life Styles and conducting psychotherapy.
2. Participants will learn that by adapting the shared inquiry method to assessing Life Style, clinicians, clients, and groups can better understand each other and work together from positions of equalized authority and power.
